Your Creative Voice is Already Within You

“Often, we get caught up trying to sound like, paint like, or create like someone we admire.”

I was reminded of something important recently while working on my book: we often spend so much time searching for our creative voice, not realising it's already expressing itself in everything we do - from how we make a cup of tea to how we notice the way afternoon light falls across a room.

Your creative voice isn't something you need to find or build from scratch. It's already present in:

  • What naturally catches your eye

  • The colours you're drawn to

  • How you tell a story

  • What moves you to tears or laughter

  • The details you notice that others might miss

Think of your creative voice like a fingerprint - utterly unique to you, formed by your experiences, perspectives, and way of seeing the world. You don't need to force it to be different or more "artistic" - you just need to give it space to emerge naturally.

Often, we get caught up trying to sound like, paint like, or create like someone we admire. While it's natural to be inspired by others, the real magic happens when we give ourselves permission to create in ways that feel authentically ours.

Here's a gentle truth I've discovered through years of teaching and creating: Your unique creative voice often speaks most clearly through what others might consider limitations. Maybe you only have fifteen minutes to create each day, or you prefer working small, or you're drawn to just a few simple materials. You don't need to view these as restrictions - they're part of what makes your creative expression uniquely yours.

In my book upcoming book, I explore how our most authentic creative expression often emerges when we stop trying to be like everyone else and start paying attention to what naturally delights and moves us.

Here's a simple way to begin recognising your creative voice:

  • Notice what you're naturally drawn to photograph

  • Pay attention to what stories you love to tell

  • Observe which colours make your heart lift

  • Remember what made you lose track of time, either now or as a child

  • Listen to what your hands want to make

In our Creative Hearts Community, we create space for each unique voice to emerge and strengthen. Through monthly calls, quarterly retreats, and ongoing connection, members discover:

  • How to trust their natural creative inclinations

  • Ways to develop their unique creative practice

  • The courage to express themselves authentically

  • Support for their individual creative journey

Thankfully, your creative voice doesn't need to shout to be powerful. Sometimes the quietest expressions carry the most meaning.

With my warmest wishes,

~ Nicola

P.S. If you're longing to explore and strengthen your unique creative voice in a supportive community, the doors to Creative Hearts are open now. Join us to discover how beautiful your authentic expression can be.

P.P.S. I love using mixed media in my Royal Talen's Art Creation sketchbook to capture moments. This is at Alma Bay on Magnetic Island. These sketches don't take long, but they are a lovely way to express your creative voice - by recording what moves you, what catches your eye and what you love.
